METHOD FOR INVESTIGATING THE STRESS-DEFORMED STATE OF STRUCTURES
The determination of displacements, deformations and stresses in structural members that bear key loads is an essential step in arriving at correct decisions affecting structural strength and reliability. The effort to combine the advantage of experimental methods for making such determinations--namely, their reliability-- with that of calculation methods--namely, their yielding of large amounts of data--has led to the development of calculation- experimental methods. This article discusses one such method in particular, one that combines finite element calculations with an experimental method involving holographic interferometry. The latter makes it possible to accurately determine the absolute displacements of open structure member surfaces, and the overall method is promising.
