THE USE OF HOPS AND FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS

The object of this paper is to discuss the use of a suite of computer programs which have been developed at the TRRL. These programs use optimisation techniques to help design engineers to reduce the costs of new roads. They can be employed at all stages of design and enable the engineer to investigate more readily the cost implications of alternative design decisions. Examples are given and suggestions made as to how the engineer using the programs can take account of such features as difficult ground conditions and can also investigate environmental matters such as the need to depress the road so as to minimise aural or visual intrusion. This paper and the three which follow were presented to the South Wales branch of the Institution on October 10th, 1973, at a symposium organised jointly by by the branch and the Department of Civil Engineering and Building, Glamorgan Polytechnic, and entitled "Road Design '74".
