LONDON'S EAST CROSS ROUTE - 2ND STAGE
This article gives a brief account of the construction of the found3.5M 1.3 mile section of the east cross route between Bow bridge and Hackney Wick, East London. The high cost is attributed to the presence of six structures and the need to design the underpass to combat possible flotation because of the high water table. Mention is made of the materials used: 100mm of rolled asphalt on 250mm of reinforced concrete for the carriageways, a continuous tensioned safety fence in the central reserve and concrete retaining walls with parapets and a steel railing at the sides. Brief details are given of each of the main structures - the Old Ford underpass, the Old Ford Footbridge, the Northern Outfall Bridge, the Wallis Road Footbridge, the Grand Union Canal Bridge and the Wick Lane Bridge. Reference is made to the part played by British rail in transporting concrete beams used in bridge construction directly to the site, 100 ton crawler cranes being used to lift them into position. /TRRL/
