EFFICIENT FIBRE REINFORCEMENT OF PRACTICAL CONCRETE MIXES
The author discusses the use of wire fibre reinforcement in concrete mixes. After pointing out that the practical effect depends on the volume fraction incorporated, the anchorage bond strength of the fibre with the concrete and the disposition of the fibres in relation to the direction of stress, he discusses each of these factors in turn. It is concluded that the maximum volume fraction that can be incorporated is 1.5 per cent for fibres up to 0.5mm diameter, but there is no limitation for larger fibres; that the use of crimped fibre is the most economical way of obtaining improved bond strength and that the use of 0.5mm X 50mm crimped fibre is the most efficient and economical way of improving mechanical performance. The practical aspect of fibre reinforcement is discussed in relation to Romualdi's theory with particular reference to fibre spacing. The author concludes by discussing the behaviour of fibre reinforced concrete at depths in the sea, where it is believed that it will result in smaller crack widths and increased resistance to fluctuating stress in the presence of sea water, he also refers to the increase in anchorage bond strength of reinforcement bars in the presence of fibres. /TRRL/
