AUTOMATED ANALYSIS OF HIGHWAY TRAFFIC
In the Netherlands, the rijkwaterstaat (rws), the ministry of transport and waterways, established a special division, the dienst verkeerskunde (dvk), which continuously collects data on traffic flows and other traffic characteristics. Automated methods of analysis of the traffic at sixty permanent counting sites throughout the country are now undertaken by this division. For each traffic lane, at each site, two inductive detection loops are placed in the road surface. From the pulses obtained, it is shown how the traffic intensity, the velocity of vehicles and their length can be determined. The accuracy of these observations is discussed. Details of the yearly survey of traffic published by the dvk is given. The application of automated traffic analysis to an automatic traffic management system on A highway, using visual signalling to drivers, is described. /TRRL/
