TRAINING FOR MAINTENANCE - PATCHING OF BLACK-TOP ROADS

Against the background of high labour turnover and an ageing workforce, the object of the exercise was to raise the standard of roadworker skills. The work selected for study was patching - the problem here being the short life of patches and the necessity of frequent visits to make further repairs. A standard method of patching was agreed upon at a specified standard and courses were held. Benefits were measured by assessing the condition of patches, using several criteria. The patches were monitored before training, immediately after, and at six month intervals after training. Patches were randomly selected and data recorded for each. A table of the condition of patches is provided from monthly inspections and statistical tests show that training significantly lengthens patch life and the benefits of training are retained. The overall benefit is derived from fewer, but more lengthy visits to sites and also from less disruption to traffic and less water ingress. /TRRL/
