THE UNMANNED TUG
The author tells how the larger "unmanned" tug has gone beyond the experimental stage to the point where several trans-ocean voyages have been completed. Such tugs are completely computerized. They are not yet totally unmanned owing to safety considerations and to requirements of the underwriters. A technical overview is given, explaining how such a tug is remotely controlled by hand sets. The education and training of the tug crews, as well as aspects of the changeover in relation to several Canadian operators, are discussed.
