SHIP STERN AND WAKE FLOWS: STATUS OF EXPERIMENT AND THEORY
This paper deals with the viscous flow over the stern and in the wake of a ship. Wave effects are largely excluded, as are those of appendages and propulsors. The emphasis is therefore on the flow around a bare body, or on the so-called nominal wake. The paper provides a review of the present status of experimental information and computational capabilities. It is shown that quite dramatic progress has been made in the computational modelling of the geometrical and numerical features of such flows, and the resulting methodology is beginning to make an impact on the solution of other problems of ship hydrodynamics.
