TORSIONAL MOMENT OF LARGE CONTAINER SHIPS CAUSED BY ROLLING MOTIONS WITH LARGE AMPLITUDES
The studies described herein show practical methods for the determination of torsional moments with large rolling amplitudes as they are caused by ship's rolling. The procedure according to the Energy Method is really uncomplicated and reliable, whereas the method applying a differential equation renders complete solutions, but the quality of results might suffer. The second method is simple only under the condition that the righting arms of the ship's sections can approximately be represented by a single polynomial. The value of the torsional moments illustrated reveals that this knowledge is actually important in regard to strength calculations of container ships.
