THYRISTOR CHOPPER CONTROLS FOR D.C. TRACTION SYSTEMS
Choppers were first designed more than ten years ago. Owing to the advantages of this design, such as the low-loss and stepless control of the motor voltage and current without using mechanical contracts, as opposed to conventional rheostatic control, the chopper is finding increasing application in short-distance traction systems. The article describes design concepts for the running and braking schemes developed to date as well as the equipment required.
