SIMPLER CONTROLS WOULD MEAN SAFER CARS

The article discusses improvements in car design which could make driving much simpler and therefore probably safer. The potential area of application is delimited which the author suggests, could do away with all pedal controls, using low power electronic devices. A device resembling an aeroplane's joy-stick is suggested and described in some detail. Facilities already available are noted, including active ride-control suspension, power operated braking and electronic accelerator control linked to automatic transmission. Future developments are proposed, which would integrate more systems and centralise all control functions, and be served by hydraulic and electronic ring-main systems. /TRRL/
