VENICE MOTORWAY CONFERENCE. SAFETY INSTALLATIONS ON MOTORWAYS

GIORNATE AUTOSTRADALI DI VENEZIA. IMPIANTI DI SICUREZZA IN AUTOSTRADA

This article, based on papers presented at a motorway conference in Venice, 20-22 June, 1974, reviews safety fence installations in Italy, France and Spain. In Italy, data on the autostrada Del sole (755 km) shows the following results: in 1967 (no barriers) there was an accident index (number per 100 million vh/km) of between 18.1 and 12.4, an injury index of 15 and a fatality index of 1. By 1969, with central reserve barriers fully installed, the accident index was 10, the injury index 5 and the mortality index nil. In France central reserve barriers are generally of three types: the double metal barrier, metal cable barriers, and concrete barriers. In Spain the general rule for barrier installation is as follows: central reserve 6 M wide with A daily traffic of 30000 vehicles; central reserve 9 M wide with a daily traffic of 45000 vehicles; and a central reserve 12 M wide with a daily traffic of 60000 vehicles. /TRRL/
