HOW DELHI MADE THE BUSES RUN ON TIME
The article begins by discussing India's transport problems and the outlook for the future, given the large increases in population. This would have made it necessary to double bus infrastructure over the next 25 years, but, by the use of the appropriate technology a software solution has been possible. This involved re-organizing networks on a direction-oriented rather than destination-oriented basis. Routing is described and consists broadly of feeder services to interchanges and shuttle services between these. Radial and ring services are also to be provided. A limited experiment indicated outstanding success, with ridership increasing by 40 per cent. By all measures the network is already more efficient and is to be extended. Details of the improvements are given, which it is hoped, will encourage a shift from car-use to bus-use. /TRRL/
