FROM 'SKID RESISTANCE' DOE TAKES THE ROAD TO 'NOISE CONSIDERATIONS'
This brief articles discusses the noise considerations which arise from the improvement of the skid resistance of concrete road surfacings by grooving. The article is mainly concerned with the decision by DOE to confine the practice for an interim period whilst the problem is being investigated. Reference is made to the different views that are held by the Cement and Concrete Association and the Alderborune Valley Environment Protection Society in relation to the noise difference between concrete and blacktop surfacings, and to the need for measurements to check the position. The author next briefly discusses texture depth and its measurement in relation to grooved and other (more random texture) surfacings, also the possibility of cutting shallower grooves. An outline is given of the history of the development of grooved concrete in relation to the need for increased skid-resistance and environmental factors. Particular reference is made to the controversy relating to the Beaconsfield to Denham section of the M40. /TRRL/
