ACCELERATION NOISE AND THE QUALITY OF TRAFFIC FLOW

Acceleration noise is produced by the range of acceleration of a vehicle. The cause of acceleration noise is examined. Among other things attention is paid to the influence of the value of this magnitude for the driver, to the geometric aspects of the road, traffic lights, weather conditions and the vehicle. It is assumed that quality of traffic flow is determined by travel time, costs, accident risk and driving comfort. On the basis of these criteria the extent to which this quality is determined by acceleration noise is studied. It appears from investigations that among other things variation in acceleration noise gives a better indication of the extent of congestion than waiting times. Furthermore a strong increase in acceleration moise would correspond to an increase in accident risk. /TRRL/
