THE SIZE OF URBAN ROAD NETWORKS - SOME EMPIRICAL FINDINGS

This article contains a descriptive-statistical analysis of urban road networks. The size and structure of the road system in six Dutch towns of different size and character are determined. The size of a road network is expressed by the number of network elements, i.e. intersections, road sections and cells. The structure of a road network is mainly measured by the distribution of intersections by degree. The size of a road network is determined by relating it to the total population of and the total road length in the town concerned. The networks of two districts in one town are compared. Finally some data on urban road system density are supplied. /TRRL/
