U.S. EMISSION TURMOIL
The article discusses the confusion among car manufacturers concerning the US emission standards to be introduced for the 1976 model year. The confusion arises from the fact that with introduction of the 1975 emission standards which require such fitments as catalytic converters, exhaust gas circulation and exhaust heated intake manifolds, more fuel is consumed and so car manufacturers have requested that the more stringent 1976 emission requirements be postponed. Likely US emission levels up to 1992 are compared. Because of mounting criticism of EPA testing methods and the need to conserve fuel, the 1975 emission levels will continue for the 1976 model year and possibly 1977. /TRRL/
