ANALYSIS OF CRACKING IN REINFORCED CONCRETE MEMBERS SUBJECTED TO BENDING AND SHEAR

This article deals with the theory of cracking, its occurrence and the width of cracks in reinforced concrete members subjected to bending, shear, and service loads. Experimental results are used to derive formulae for the calculation of reinforced concrete members subjected to bending and shear (it is assumed that failure is caused by bending). Failure by shear will be treated in another article. The spacing and width of cracks under service loads can be determined with sufficient accuracy by means of the above formulae. Recommendations are put forward for practising engineers. These recommendations are based on the theoretical and experimental results obtained by the author. /TRRL/
