COMPARATIVE INVESTIGATIONS BETWEEN SUSPENSION BRIDGES AND CABLE-STAYED BRIDGES FOR SPANS EXCEEDING 600 M
VERGLEICHE ZWISCHEN HANGEBRUECKEN UND SCHRAEGKABELBRUECHEN FUR SPANNWEITEN UEBER 600 M
Comparative studies have shown that cable-stayed bridges, the fan-shaped cables of which are spaced every 10 to 25 M at the level of the deck, are technically and economically superior to suspension bridges, even for spans exceeding 600 M. This advantage is particularly marked as regards aerodynamic stability. Satisfactory stiffness is obtained because of the high stress ratio in the stayed girders. The bridge cross-section must be flat and aerodynamic. For large spans, an a-shaped bridge tower should be preferred to vertical twin bridge towers because of the inclination of the cable planes. This report was presented to the "Austrian Steel Days" in Vienna in 1971. /TRRL/
