DISTRIBUTION OF LEAD IN VEGETATION BORDERING ROADS IN THE SYDNEY METROPOLITAN AREA
Two major uses of lead are listed, one being as an anti-knock agent in petrol. Influences on the amount discharged are discussed and the principal determinants are traffic volume and community size. The seriousness of lead as a pollutant is stressed and details of the tonnage added to petrol in the U.S.A. and Australia are given. There is a brief summary of American research indicating that plants take up lead from cars via the soil in which they grow. The Australian survey is described, including plant sampling, processing and the determination of lead content. The results are given in table-form for six locations which were surveyed between two and four times over a nine month period. Factors causing variability in results are noted and it was concluded that a link existed between lead content and traffic flow. A map of survey sites and traffic densities is added. /TRRL/
