PERSONALITY AND TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ALCOHOLICS WITH HIGH AND LOW RECORDS OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS AND VIOLATIONS

Significant differences on scales of the Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory were found between alcoholics with high (HAV) and low (LAV) records of traffic accidents and violations. The HAV alcoholics described in this study and the nonalcoholics identified as high-accident drivers in other studies seem to share common personality-temperament characteristics which predispose them toward the use of a motor vehicle in acting out conflicts. Perhaps the tendency to identify all alcoholics as being equally responsible for highway accidents, violations and fatalities originates in a confounding of the effects of alcohol and the acting-out of conflicts. The data suggest that only some alcoholics tend to use a motor vehicle in acting out their conflicts and thus contribute disproportionately to highway statistics.
