RUN-OFF ON ROAD SURFACES

Recent trends in specifications and road construction practice seem to favour an increasingly higher minimum transverse gradient (from 1.5 to 2.0 to 2.5%), and A macro-roughness of the riding surface. But neither of these measures absolutely ensures the quick evacuation of water from the road surface. This article examines three specific cases of aquaplaning, for each of which a critical speed has been established. (a), aquaplaning of a rolling load- carrying wheel (as in the case of aircraft wheels or the non-driven wheels of a car): (b) aquaplaning whilst rolling with partial skidding, of a driven or braked wheel: (C) aquaplaning with total skidding, when the wheels are braked and locked. Calculations shown indicate danger of aquaplaning at speeds of 80-100 km/h in the presence of A water film of 1 mm or less. /TRRL/
