BOLOGNA INTERCHANGE - 1974. ANALYSIS OF AN EXODUS
NODO DI BALOGNA - 1974. ANALISI DI UN ESODO
This article reports a traffic survey and analysis carried out to assess the capacity of the bologna interchange for dealing with the seasonal exodus of August holiday traffic. The survey was carried out on the weekend of the 26, 27 and 28 August, 1974, with survey points sited to observe the Milan-Rome and Bologna-Ancona motorways, and the Emilia state road. A comparison of survey data with that of 1973 for the same period, showed an overall decrease in traffic of about 20% for 1974. This is attributed in part to the petrol crisis. Improved traffic flow and a marked reduction of accidents in 1974 is attributed to the opening of the 18-km 3-lane motorway section between Modena and Bologna. There was no accident nor any congestion on this section during the survey period. /TRRL/
