EXPERIMENTAL HIGH ENERGY CULVERTS UTILIZING CONCRETE RINGS IN CONCRETE PIPE
The Ohio Department of Transportation has completed one of two culverts utilizing the principle of concrete internal energy dissipator rings in concrete pipe sections. This design was chosen so that external energy dissipating devices such as stilling wells would not be needed. Simulation tests conducted at the University of Akron for the Hog Run culvert indicate the bevels and grooves implemented in the design did not excessively deteriorate the tumbling action in the outlet pipe chamber. When completed, the two culverts will be continuously monitored to obtain depth of flow and velocity data. It is expected that sufficient information will be obtained to enable the standardization of internal energy dissipators for use throughout the state. High energy culverts can now be constructed with only a slight variation from the prefabricated pipe with rock channel concept and enable the use of concrete culvert pipe over a much broader range of drainage applications.
