NEW LIFE FOR OLD ASPHALT
In Nevada a process has been perfected to recycle and reuse old paving material. The obstacle overcome was raising the temperature of old asphalt sufficiently and economically to form a recycled hot mix. A heat exchange unit measuring six feet in diameter and 26 feet in length is capable of producing 80 tons of recycled material per hour. In addition to the cost savings, estimated at 23%, the patent holder has emphasized reusing scarce aggregate. Adjustments can be made for asphalt content so that the probability of obtaining a pavement with optimum properties is greater than if one starts from scratch. Comparison testing is now being conducted to determine the long term success of recycled pavement.
