HIGH-SPEED GROUND TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS BY MEANS OF UNCONVENTIONAL SUSPENSION-TECHNIQUES AND AIR TRANSPORT
Intensive studies of the characteristics features of maglev-systems on the one hand, and the transportation needs of the German economy within the next 15 years on the other, identified three areas of profitable applications of unconventional suspension techniques: 1. Long-haul mixed passenger/car/freight transport to link major industrial centers ("HSB"), 2. short-haul high frequency, passenger city-to-airport links and 3. airport-airport links. Based on the investigations for the FRG, applications which might be feasible for new high-speed suspension technologies in conjunction with air transport are discussed: application as long-haul passenger transport systems: feeder services hitherto carried out by air transport; application as public airport-to-city links at high speeds to increase attractiveness of these public feeder services; application as a link between two airports, forming a combined airport for improved and more uniform utilization of the airport infrastructure.
