SEVERITY CRITERIA FOR INJURIES SUSTAINED IN CAR ACCIDENTS

CRITERES DE SEVERITE DES LESIONS CAUSEES PAR LES ACCIDENTS D'AUTOMOBILES

The casualty department of the R. Poincare hospital in Garches in conjunction with the Physiology and biomechanics laboratory of the Renault-Peugeot firm has undertaken the systematic study of all automobile accidents, the casualties from which were sent to the hospital over the last two years. The objective of this multi-disciplinary study is to obtain a better knowledge of real automobile accidents and to relate the parameters characterizing vehicle impact with those characterizing the injuries to vehicle occupants. Another aim is to improve the efficiency of present restraint systems. Similar investigations were started in Lyon by the ONSER and in Salon-de-Provence by Professor Bourret. The data collected by the three teams were pooled. In order to be able to compare the different categories of accidents a table was devised under the caption: injury severity index. This table is reproduced at the end of this article. /TRRL/
