PRIORITY FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT VEHICLES IN TRAFFIC NETWORKS CONTROLLED BY TRAFFIC SIGNALS
PRIORITE POUR LES TRANSPORTS PUBLIC DANS LES RESEAUX DE TRAFIC CONTROLES PAR DES INSTALLATIONS DE SIGNALISATION LUMINEUSE
Studies conducted in the town of Bern show that the waiting time of public transport vehicles can be considerably reduced if: (1) traffic signal installations are designed with the help of an extended network optimization program of the Transyt type, e.g. taking particular account of public transport vehicles; (2) private transport is limited so as not to hinder public transport in the network. A comparison was made of the average speed of private and public transport vehicles during evening peak hour. Results showed that by applying traffic plan a (traffic signal phases giving priority to public transport vehicles) it was possible to improve the average speed of buses by 1.5 km/h, while private cars were slowed down by approximately 1.5 km/h. In order to interpret these results correctly, it is necessary to take into account the fact that public transport in the zone Mattenhof/Villette studied represents only 15% of all car-km/h units but that it carries over 2/3 of the total number of persons carried per km/h. /TRRL/
