DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL. AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF AVERAGE QUANTITIES OF ALCOHOL ON DRIVER BEHAVIOUR

The object of the research is to determine the effects of average blood alcohol concentrations of 1.3 promille on driver behaviour. This was studied by means of a driving test. The behavioural errors were observed and 6 variables of the vehicle movements were recorded. An experimental group (n = 32) and a control group (n = 23) drove on the test route in a specially equipped vehicle. Afterwards both groups drove over the section when they were not under the influence of alcohol. Two hours later a second journey was underkaken; the control group drove under the same conditions as before, and the experimental group under the influence of alcohol. A significant increase in errors was noticed in the experimental group, and this was particularly marked during complicated driving tasks. /TRRL/
