A SURROGATE CHOICE OF TRANSPORT TECHNOLOGY
The theoretical basis of this approach to the choice of transport technology derives from the theory of revealed preference. According to this theory, a consumer's system of preferences can be found directly by confronting him with A sufficient number of options and observing each time which one he prefers. Thus faced with a certain income, and set of prices, a consumer "reveals" his preferences, and motor vehicle statistics, which are used to test this theory, will tend to reflect such preferences, if the reference period is carefully selected. Using Nigerian data, results are presented which show the annual percentage change in the number of cars relicensed in 1966 which were manufactured between 1952-1957, and 1964-1965. Similar tables show the percentage changes when the cars are classified by brand name. These percentage changes are used to rank each brand of car in terms of "revealed" choice. Thus the first ranked represents the best "saloon car technology". This technique is standard in modern demand theory, though this application to the choice of transport technology may be novel. /TRRL/
