REDESIGNING THE DESIGN PROCESS: SUPERSTRUCTURES OF SHIPS

This paper, prepared for the International Ship Environmental Design Conference, emphasizes the social system on board ships as a function not only of large scale trends in society and the shipping industry, but also of the fact that the social system exists within the limits given by the superstructure and accommodation. By looking at a conventional superstructure one finds that the traditional shipboard organization is physically built into this. If the traditional shipboard social organization is to be changed, the superstructure must be changed. The paper stresses that the design process of today gives those who operate ships few opportunities to have a superstructure according to their needs. At present, economic and technical criteria dominate the design process. If decisions are to be based on social criteria as well another design approach must be found. The paper describes one alternative approach.
