PIPS ICEBREAKING SYSTEM BEING TESTED
The PIPS concept of icebreaking, in which a ship's vertical bow motion is greatly amplified at its natural pitch frequency, has been extended into a second phase of development with virtual elimination of half of the original system's tanks and machinery. PIPS (pneumatically induced pitching system), as initially introduced by Arctic Engineers and Constructors, consisted of both bow and stern ballast tanks that were alternately filled and emptied to to maximize the downstroke force of the bow against the ice. The latest refinement, PIPS MK-II, consists of bow tanks only, with an above water line height about equal to the below water line depth of the discharge ports. Significant advantages over the previous configuration are listed.
