AN INTEGRAL APPROACH TO COATING ECONOMY FOR LONG-TERM HULL PROTECTION
Anticipating extended periods between survey drydocking, a marine paint manufacturer presented a paper at a conference arguing the technical and economic case for in-water hull maintenance, and this article gives excerpts from that paper. A pre-treatment procedure and coating specification for the integral protection of the submerged hull - suitable for an in-water maintenance policy - were suggested and are described in this article. Examples are also given to illustrate the economics of modern paint systems and maintenance practice over an extended period of time.
