FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF THE MIRRLEES BLACKSTONE K MAJOR MEDIUM SPEED DIESEL ENGINE
The commercial rating of the Mirrlees Blackstone K Major engine has increased from 300 kW (400 bhp) per cylinder at 500 rev/min and 13.8 bars (200 lb/sq. in.) b.m.e.p. to 450 kW (600 bhp) per cylinder at 600 rev/min and 17.2 bars (250 lb/ sq. in.) b.m.e.p. over a period of 8 years. The K Major range now provides units up to 8 MW (10,800 bhp) from a single 18-cylinder engine. The changes in design of engine components and the techniques of development used to achieve this increase of 50 percent in power output are described and the achieved performance compared with the predictions made at the time of the original commercial release. Some 550 K Major engines in units up to 7.2 MW (9600 bhp) are in service for power generation and marine propulsion duties of which about 350 are operating on residual fuels. Details of operating experience over service periods of up to 30,000 hours are presented and examples shown of the influence of field experience on design and development work leading to improved reliability, availability and economy.
