MECHANIZED TWO-SIDED WELDING OF FLAT PLATES AVOIDING THE TURNING OPERATION
MECHANIZIERTES ZWEISEITENSCHWEISSEN EBENER BLECHE UNTER VERMEIDUNG DES WENDEVORGANGS
The method described, which has not yet been applied in large-scale industrial production, is to be used in shipbuilding and other welded steel constructions. The characteristic features are gas metal arc (MAG) overhead welding of the root pass and filling of the remaining joint in the flat position by submerged arc welding (multiple wire technique). Slight dimensional deviations of the weld groove from the nominal values in MAG-overhead welding of the root are compensated by electronic control of the welding process according to the groove configuration. Tabulated data show that welding speeds are high in comparison with other practices. In German.
