NEAT: NEW EFFICIENT AMERICAN TANKER

This article gives details of a new tanker series in which both initial construction and operational savings can be realized without penalizing safety, efficiency or service flexibility. An important principle in this series is that maintenance is to be reduced to a minimum through design and selection of equipment. Criteria which were followed in selecting the sizes and drafts of the designs, as well as ballasting arrangements, manning and accommodations, and cargo and propulsion machinery are all discussed.
