STERNGEAR FOR THE SELF-PROPELLED OFFSHORE DRILLING RIG
This paper reviews the fundamental requirements for optimum sterngear reliability with particular reference to the special problems to be anticipated in designing for offshore drilling rigs. The ways in which the cost of periodic inspection and eventual repairs, and the heavier consequential losses due to loss of hire which attend such incidents may be minimized or eliminated are also examined. The paper also illustrates and describes an installation incorporating sterngear in which repair and replacement of all the sterngear equipment, comprising the propeller and shaft, sternbearing and seals, and the rudder, are carried out afloat.
