TRANSPORT CAPACITY AND ECONOMICS OF CONTAINER SHIPS FROM A PRODUCTION THEORY POINT OF VIEW
Factors influencing the transport capacity of a ship are examined with the aid of a transport model using principles of production theory. The analyses provides a theoretical explanation of growth in speed and size of container ship designs. By making use of a ship cost model it is possible to determine that combination of a ship's speed and capacity which yields the minimum cost for a given transport demand. It is also possible to find the minimum cost alternative of a fleet as a function of the transport capacity. The theory is illustrated by a case study from container transportation. It is shown that the minimum cost solution is not always the optimum solution.
