SYSTEM FOR AVOIDING COLLISIONS AT SEA
By combining the Sperry Collision Threat Assessment capability with normal functions of a conventional radar, the display is easy to interpret and corresponds to intuitive concepts. Also the display exhibits all the information required to detect, quickly assess danger, and formulate a safe and legal maneuver in any density of ship traffic. Thus, at a glance the conning officer can see all elements of potential collision targets without digesting and manipulating masses of numerical data. The system has been designed to enhance and complement the cues already used in traditional conning. Thus it does not require significant modification to the existing conning procedure. The result is a radar/computer/display system that retains most of the best features of various systems on the market and adds totally new advances. Two displays are provided--the radar display and the maneuver display. The radar display combines a standard Sperry MK 12 radar presentation with the automatic threat assessment electronics. Thus, detection and threat assessment are accomplished on the same radar cathode ray tube display and without the need for manual plotting.
