WESTERSHELDE RADAR CHAIN
A chain of radar stations along a heavily travelled estuary in Holland is described. The first stage of the radar chain is described, and the capabilities of the complete chain are also discussed. The complete chain will not only improve the safe navigation on the estuary, but it will also enable quick passage through crowded locks. In a further expansion phase a system will be adopted for the automatic processing and presentation of data derived from the radar information. Besides facilitating the planning of ship handling by the locks, it will provide radar observers and pilotage offices with better data on ship movements and permit all data on channels navigated by ships to be recorded.
