A STUDY OF PILING
In this article the author discusses the various properties of steel relevant to its use in piling, such as welding, the mechanical properties of steel, chemical composition, corrosion, and fatigue and brittle fracture problems. The safety of pile foundations is discussed, and the author examines a series of pile types (reinforced concrete, timber and steel) with the aim of finding a method that enables an objective estimate of the actual pile economy. The author concludes with the opinion that steel is the best material for piling purposes, and gives reasons for this opinion.
