BARGE AND "CATUG" DESIGNED AS UNIT TO CUT COST

"Catug," a new tug/barge transportation system for ocean service, is said to do the same job as a conventional ship for significantly less cost. This unique design incorporates a twin-screw catamaran tug that fits closely over and around the specially contoured stern of the barge. Advantages of the system are discussed, and these include its lower operating costs, better propulsive efficiency than regular pusher tug/barge combinations, and less tug turnaround time in port. The hydraulic locking system is described, as are the machinery arrangement and control system.
