MATERIALS FOR CRYOGENIC TANKS AND FABRICATING TECHNIQUES
When choosing the optimum material for the containment tanks in an LNG carrier, various factors must be considered, including the physical properties at the service temperature, ease of fabricating and welding, and cost-plus-availability. These factors are considered for austenitic stainless steels, low nickel steels, nickel steels, high nickel alloys, and aluminum. The author discusses certain advantages of some of the materials over the others, and results of testing on some of the materials.
