NATION'S FIRST UNIVERSITY RUN SPILL CONTROL SCHOOL UNDERWAY
The first session of Texas A&M University's oil spill control school was held April 7-11 on the campus of the Moody College of Marine Sciences and Maritime Resources at Galveston, attended by 20 persons representing over a dozen oil companies. Operated by A&M's Texas Engineering stresses hands-on experience with oil spill recovery equipment. Classroom sessions are informal, and draw upon the expertise of students, as well as covering specially prepared materials. The oil spill control school was developed by A&M's Environmental Engineering Division, Civil Engineering Department, under the sponsorship of the American Petroleum Institute. The goal of the school is to train participants to recognize potential spill situations, and to organize, plan, and direct an oil spill cleanup effectively and within the framework of the law. Instructors for the school come from the Civil Engineering Department, Texas Engineering Extension Service, the U.S. Coast Guard, Environmental Protection Agency and private industry. The five-day sessions are held every two weeks, and are limited to 20 students. Each oil company is allocated a certain number of slots, with additional slots designated for private industry.
