PROCEEDINGS: TRAFFIC RECORDS WORKSHOP-DECKERS, COLORADO, INTRODUCTION

A summary is presented of the planning and results of the workshop which was organized with the intention of assembling qualified professionals to interact in working sessions aimed at producing guidance on the utility and applications of traffic records systems. It was also provide guidelines for the application, and examples of the usefullness of traffic records systems. The workshop was informal and most of the time was spent in small groups. Plenary sessions guided participants on the direction of their work, summarized the progress of all working groups, and made comments and criticisms. The topics discussed at the workshop are as follows: traffic records systems, general framework; identification and location of high accident locations; evaluation of safety improvement projects; allocation and assignment of enforcement personnel; highway maintenance programming and evaluation; evaluation of adjudication procedures; determining the nature and magnitude of the traffic safety problem: response to public inquiries; budgeting and budget substantiation; highway safety research.
