SPECIFICATION FOR CASTIN PLACE PILES FORMED UNDER BENTONITE SUSPENSION
Specification clauses are presented for addition to the normal FPS (Federation of Piling Specialists) Specification for Cast in Place Piles, when piles are to be bored under bentonite suspension and the concrete placed by tremie. The specifications relate to the process in which a bentonite suspension is used instead of casing to retain the ground during boring. One of the most important aspects of the method is that concrete must fully displace the bentonite suspension in each pile. The clauses presented here are aimed at achieving the optimum displacement conditions. Design features are covered which relate to minimum pile diameter, load carried by end bearing and shaft friction, and the minimum cover to the main bars of steel reinforcement. Concrete mix design and the water cement ratio are specified. Fourteen characteristics of bentonite are listed, and rules regarding construction are outlined. Notes are presented for the guidance of contractors and engineers.
