REVIEW OF THE EUROPEAN SYMPOSIUM ON PENETRATION TESTING

The symposium was planned with the intent to document the use of penetrometer testing in site investigations, outline areas where further research is desirable, investigate the need for standardization, and provide guidelines for further development. State-of-the-art reports were presented by 26 national societies which described the geological background and the penetrometers used, the test procedures, methods used in interpretation and evaluation of results, and suggestions for further developments. Comparatively little interest was demonstrated in dynamic and the Standard penetration testing while there was widespread interest in the static penetration test (SPT). The recent introduction of Dutch machines with capacities of 20t or more has extended the use of the static penetration test to dense sands; these machines are capable of providing a force of 7t on the core i.e. 1000 kg/cm(sq.). The various aspects of the SPT are reviewed. The advantages of the electrical penetrometer, the influence of the rate of penetration on the value of core resistance, and the shape of the penetrometer were discussed. There is a preference for the straight cylindrical shaft. Comments were made on the use of the friction ratio, the relationship between static core resistance and shear strength in clays, and the interpretation of static penetrometer test results in terms of the mechanical properties of soils. It was recommended that the International Society of Soil Mechanics & Foundation Engineering should set up a committee to produce standards for the principle types of penetrometers. A paper on penetration testing in the U.K. is presented which presents the state-of-the-art and discusses future trends. A summary is also presented of 3 British papers: comparisons of the results for static penetration tests in large in situ plate tests in fissured London clay; the Standard Penetration Test in insensitive calys and soft rocks; and a staticdynamic sounding technique. The salient features are presented of a discussion on standardization of penetrometers and future cooperation in Europe.
