STRESS-STRAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF SAND
In an effort to study the stress-strain behavior of dry granular soils with particular reference to the unloading/reloading characteristics, the behavior of samples were investigated (using apparatus designed by Daniel) when subjected to a varying stress field. All 3 principal stresses were independently varied as required, 2 being held constant and one varying during each experiment by using a true triaxial test. In cases where lateral stresses were equal, the sample behavior was verified by duplicating the experiment using a standard triaxial test. Representative results are presented. In this approach, the intermediate principal stress has been taken into account not only in the elastoplastic behavior but also in the rupture theory. The instantaneous modulus of elasticity for primary loading, or tangent modulus, which is stress dependent under these circumstances, has been expressed by a stress dependent relationship. Unloading and reloading characteristics have been shown to be more involved than previously proposed. Work is currently proceeding to formulate a nonlinear stress-strain theory of a more general nature to include all three strains in addition to the stresses.
