NEW APARATUS FOR CONSOLIDATION BY ELECTRO-OSMOSIS
An apparatus is described which has one-dimensional flow characteristics and is useful for the study of field problems related to electro-osmotic consolidation and measurement of soil parameters. Simplified field conditions are considered, and details are given of a rectangular box (to contain a soil sample 6 cm in height, 20 cm long and 20 cm wide) used to simulate boundary conditions. The main components of the box are: porous stones behind 2 perforated plate electrodes which facilitate drainage; flexiable rubber membrane placed on the top of the soil sample (allows application of a controllable uniform pressure to represent different overburden pressures). The pressure on the membrane serves to seal the soil sample from the atmosphere. The side walls and the bottom are made of lucite which is both electrically and hydraulically "impermeable." Hydraulic back pressure can be applied to the sample through the drainage lines. Drained or undrained conditions can be established at the electrodes as desired. A constant voltage d-c power supply is used and the voltage difference at the two electordes can be kept constant over a range of values. The shear strength of the soil after electro-osmotic consolidation can be measured at six positions along the sample using a vane shear apparatus mounted on a cantilever frame. The moisture contents at different locations between the electrodes are determined immediately after the test, and the degree of heterogeneity developed by electrosomotic consolidation can be evaluated. A typical result using the apparatus is presented.
