BEHAVIOR OF BORED PILES IN SAND
The discussers compare the approach of the German Committee on Large Bored Piles with the essentials of the approach of the authors. The German approach differs from that of the authors in the definition of failure load at a settlement of only 1 in. and, consequently with the authors' suggestions of economical loads in general. The disagreement is shown in tables which are bases on about 30 test loadings of piles with diameters of 1m-2.2m and 10m-30m in length. A few conditions that were established are set forth. From the tables, one can plot a graph and choose the design load independence on the allowable settlement. This assumes a safety factor of 2 against the defined fictitious failure load at a settlement of 15 cm. The settlements under design loads are on the order of 2 cm - 4 cm. Such settlements are connected with differential settlements of 1 cm - 2 cm, which are usually admissible in our practice for bridges as well as for concrete framework.
